Transit Lightcurve Signatures of Artificial Objects
نویسندگان
چکیده
The forthcoming space missions, able to detect Earth-like planets by the transit method, will a fortiori also be able to detect the transit of artificial planet-size objects. Multiple artificial objects would produce lightcurves easily distinguish-able from natural transits. If only one artificial object transits, detecting its artificial nature becomes more difficult. We discuss the case of three different objects (triangle, 2-screen, louver-like 6-screen) and show that they have a transit lightcurve distinguishable from the transit of natural planets, either spherical or oblate, although an ambiguity with the transit of a ringed planet exists in some cases. We show that transits, especially in the case of multiple artificial objects, could be used for the emission of attention-getting signals, with a sky coverage comparable to the laser pulse method. The large number of expected planets (several hundreds) to be discovered by the transit method by next space missions will allow to test these ideas.

Transiting planets - lightcurve analysis for eccentric orbits
Transiting planet lightcurves have historically been used predominantly for measuring the depth and hence ratio of the planet-star radii, p. Equations have previously been presented by Seager & Mallén-Ornelas (2003) for the analysis of the total and trough transit lightcurve times to derive the ratio of semi-major axis to stellar radius, a/R∗, in the case of circular orbits. Here, a new analyti...
متن کاملMeasuring the Oblateness and Rotation of Transiting Extrasolar Giant Planets
We investigate the prospects for characterizing extrasolar giant planets by measuring planetary oblateness from transit photometry and inferring planetary rotational periods. The rotation rates of planets in the solar system vary widely, reflecting the planets’ diverse formational and evolutionary histories. A measured oblateness, assumed composition, and equation of state yields a rotation rat...
متن کاملSearching for exoplanets in the Kepler public data
NASA’s Kepler mission to search for extrasolar planets has collected data from hundreds of thousands of star systems, and has discovered nearly 1000 confirmed exoplanets to date in addition to over 3000 unconfirmed candidates. The mission detects exoplanets using transit photometry, which detects the transit of a planet in front of a star as transient drops in stellar intensity. Raw data is col...
متن کاملOrbital perturbations of transiting planets: A possible method to measure stellar quadrupoles and to detect Earth-mass planets
The recent discovery of a planetary transit in the star HD 209458, and the subsequent highly precise observation of the transit lightcurve with HST, is encouraging to search for any phenomena that might induce small changes in the lightcurve. Here we consider the effect of the quadrupole moment of the parent star, and of a possible second planet perturbing the orbit of the transiting planet. Bo...

We present a synthesis of physical effects influencing the observed lightcurve of an extrasolar giant planet (EGP) transiting its host star. The synthesis includes a treatment of Rayleigh scattering , cloud scattering, refraction, and molecular absorption of starlight in the EGP atmosphere. Of these effects, molecular absorption dominates in determining the transit-derived radius R, for planeta...
